The PAs Practicing in Emergency Medicine and Urgent Care: 2021 Survey showed the highest proportion (15.6%) of PA respondents reported a total income of $120,001 – $130,000. 13.3%, reported a total income of $130,001 – $140,000. The lowest 1.5% reported less than $40,000, and 0.8% of respondents reported the highest income of more than $250,000. Over 64% of the PAs that responded reported an income higher than $120,000.
This report was released in May of 2022. It was conducted by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), in collaboration with the Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants (SEMPA). PAs responded to the survey from September 9, 2021, to October 13, 202. 16,373 PAs fit the inclusion criteria, and 1,876 PAs participated, with a response rate of 11.7%.
PAs in emergency medicine often have the opportunity to earn extra income by working different shifts. As the survey showed, 58.4% of respondents reported an hourly pay structure compared to 37.4% who said a salary-based pay structure. PAs in the midwest reported lower incomes, with 15.6% reporting income from $110,001 to $120,000; this compares to PAs in the Northeast and West, where 16.5% and 16.0% of PAs in those respective regions reported income of $120,001 – $130,000.
The report looked at different types of PA. 54.0% of respondents reported receiving bonus pay. Only 45.3% of respondents reported night pay, and 18.8% reported evening pay. The survey also asked about holidays and overtime pay.
This report is comprehensive for PAs working in emergency medicine and looks at many factors beyond salary. It details benefits such as continuing education funds, medical, and malpractice insurance.
Beyond the financial and benefits aspects, it looks at the time allocation for PAs, including the percentage of time in administrative duties. It also looks at education and training for PAs in emergency medicine and how that correlates to income.
Emergency medicine is a popular specialty for many PAs, and this report can help look at what other PAs receive for compensation and benefits. Like any salary report, it is essential to remember that it does not give a complete picture of your exact situation, and you should look at it as a generalization. Compared to PAs in other specialties, emergency medicine typically has higher incomes and can be great for work/life balance.
