2023 AAPA Salary Report Shows Increased PA Compensation 

The 2023 AAPA salary report showed increased salaries for PAs compared to the 2022 report. PA compensation was up 4.3% in 2022 to $120,000, indicating a rebound from the lows during the COVID-19 pandemic and an increase from $115,000 reported in 2022. The median compensation for new graduates (who graduated in the last three years) was $110,000. The information is available for free to AAPA members. 

The AAPA is the national organization that represents PAs. They conduct a PA salary survey in February and release the report in the summer. 12,180 PAs responded to at least some of the questions, only a tiny percentage of AAPA members and an even smaller percentage of certified PAs.

A strength of the AAPA salary report is the amount of detail on salary and benefits; it also reports total compensation, base salary, and bonus. It also looks at the data by state and specialty. 

Whenever you look at PA compensation reports, it is essential to remember that many factors determine compensation. It is necessary to look at the entire benefits package. Bonus or productivity pay can significantly impact overall salary, and you need to consider it when looking at a job offer. A job offering a high salary does not mean the bonus or benefits are great. 

The AAPA salary report is only one resource on PA salaries; because of the low response rate, it is best to compare it to other salary reports. When comparing actual salaries to these reports, it is essential to remember that it is a generalization of what PAs are making.

  1. I did see an increase in my salary as an ER, APP. Not sure if it is keeping up with inflation. How do you think this relates to provider satisfaction? Money isn’t everything.
