PA Salaries Increase to $115,470 in 2020
There was an increased mean salary for PAs in 2020 to $115,470, according to the NCCPA Statistical Profile of Certified PAs. An increase from $113,186 in the previous year’s report. Less than we have seen in recent years, but an improvement compared to the AAPA salary report, which showed a decrease in salaries last year because of furloughs and layoffs due to COVID-19.
The NCCPA is the certifying body for PAs in the United States, and it is responsible for the initial certification of PAs and the ongoing maintenance of certification. It was first established in 1974 and has collected data on PAs shortly after. Since 2012 it has increased its data collection on PAs through an online profile. Through these profiles, the NCCPA has been releasing annual reports on the PA profession.
The annual reports include data over three years. It surveys PAs who were certified as of December 31, 2020, and made updates to their profile between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2020. Data from 2016 gives a five-year comparison in this year’s report.
The data from this report does not provide in-depth detail on PA salaries that we see in others. However, it has a response rate of 85.9% of certified PAs. Of the 148,560 certified PAs in the U.S. 127,560, responded to at least a portion of the profile. The salary data from the profiles is the total income from PA positions. Over the last five years, PA salaries have increased by 10.9%. PAs in surgical subspecialties had the highest average salaries.
The profile includes more than PA salaries and shows other data on the PA profession, such as the age of PAs, practice type, geographic location, and educational level.
There has been a lot of changes in the PA profession this past year. The PA name change and PA modernization bills in many states were some of the significant changes. Despite these changes, the PA profession continues to grow, and salaries look poised to continue to grow in the future.
