PA Provides Career Building Service as a Side Hustle

Interview with PA from Advanced Practice Provider Solutions

We start our series on PAs who have side hustles, featuring Lianne Hahn. Lianne went to PA school at A.T. Still University in Mesa, AZ. She is now living and practicing as a PA in Fort Lauderdale, FL; as well as running her own business on the side. She is the owner of Advanced Practice Provider Solutions, which is a career building service and we’re happy to have interviewed her.

Work as a PA

I have been a PA for 4 years. My hours per week vary depending on how much work I decide to take on, which could be anywhere from 0 to 80.

I was previously working in hospitalist medicine where I was given a list of patients to see and when I was done seeing the patients I could leave. We had the flexibility of showing up whenever we wanted as long as the job got done. Most hospitalist positions provide flexibility, allowing people to work multiple jobs.

Right now, I am working in Urgent Care and doing cosmetic injections as an independent contractor. However, the specialties I work in vary from day to day or week to week depending on where I book myself. I can decide when I am available and how much I want to work. It’s all about networking and connections; not what you know, but who you know. People know of my work ethic and request me to work shifts for them, I’m essentially like my own staffing agency.

Finding a Flexible Job

It fell into my lap, I didn’t find it. The medical director contacted me and asked me to be a part of his group. I was their first PA.

Side Gig Description and Time Spent Working

I own a company called Advanced Practice Provider Solutions. Advanced Practice Provider Solutions is a family owned and operated all-inclusive, career building production that provides a variety of necessary services for the job seeker or independent contractor.

Services include resume reviewing and editing, ghost-writing resumes and cover letters, reviewing and editing LinkedIn profiles, career coaching / mentoring, contract review and negotiation recommendations. Also, if you’re 1099, or interested in becoming 1099, we have the resources to help you succeed.

Every resume is reviewed diligently by both a medical professional (M.D, D.O, or PA) and a Masters or Ph.D level professor, to provide you with the critical eye of a seasoned teacher (grammar and punctuation wise), but also a medical perspective to keep you in line with what is needed to be recognized in the industry.

We are based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but are able to provide services around the world, remotely through telecommunication means. We have helped new graduate PAs and medical students to seasoned medical professionals and career changers land interviews and get their dream jobs. Our team of PAs, professors, and attorneys strive to make you stand out and feel confident in your career movement. We aspire to make a difference!

Starting Side Gig

I am involved in my state PA association, FAPA. I show up to almost all of their dinners and often meet a lot of new graduates who are looking for direction with what happens when they graduate. I had originally started helping out new graduates and through word of mouth it expanded to all different career levels of PAs and other APPs.

Motivation to Start a Business

I wanted to help people find good jobs (not just any job) and stand out in a crowd of resumes.

Balancing Work as a PA and Owning a Business?

I am an independent contractor myself, so essentially I have the flexibility of deciding when and where I want to work. On the days I am working, I always have my laptop and cell phone with me to work on my business during down time.

I don’t think I would call it a “balance” as much as I would call it being persistent, dedicated and having time management. If I have free time, I am usually working on my business in some way shape or form. I think to be successful in a business; balance does not always mean equality (between a regular full time job and starting your business). My balance shifts to one side or another depending on where the needs of the business are on any given day.

Regular Hours as a PA and Side Gig

Yes, I do think I could. My “work” doesn’t stop after 9-5pm. If you want something bad enough you don’t turn your clock off at 5pm. Things you say no to – other people are saying yes – so if you say no enough other people are going to get ahead of you and take your work. You have to be the “yes” person. If the clock is ticking, I’m available for work. I think the dedication and quality I provide shows on our website, my goal is to share my knowledge with others and help everyone in our industry raise up together.

Yes, I had a TON of student loans. First, I refinanced with SOFI. Second, I took all of my bonuses and “extra income” to paying them down. So yes, it does help!

Challenges of Starting a Business

Wearing all of the hats; by that, I mean being the content writer, website developer, marketing, accountant, resume editor, career coach, etc.

Long Term Goal with the Side Gig

I would like to continue doing what I do as a side gig, but essentially if we ever got busy enough to where it would make sense or require me to quit other work I would. The best person you can work for is yourself.

Advice for New Grads Starting out Looking for Side Jobs

The best thing you can do is find someone who is doing what you want to be doing and look at the path they took to getting there. Emulate what they did and do it better
