I recently saw the article “Greater Non-Physician Staffing Helps Healthcare Revenue Cycle” and liked that it pointed out using PAs and NPs helped increase revenue and productivity; however I’m not sure why it is such a surprise. It seems like fairly simple math.
Physician salary >>> PA salary
Physician payment = PA Payment
then
PA revenue > Physician revenue
Maybe it is simple math to me, but for every office visit a PA sees the reimbursement is 85 – 100% of the physician fee. Last time I checked PA salary is less than half of physician counterparts which means for the cost of paying a PA the group is getting a higher percentage of money that is paid for the service.

I’m not saying that PAs should be paid 85% of the physician salary I’m just saying that it’s pretty easy to look at the numbers and see how PA’s are going to account for larger gains in revenue.
Another reason the numbers don’t totally make sense is that they are looking at revenue per full-time physician, so the more people you employ that can contribute to the revenue (bring money into the business) the more revenue you’re going to have. Of course by employing more PAs and NPs who can bring in more revenue to the practice is going to help.
As more organizations realize the value of PAs in increasing revenue the more opportunities there will be for PAs. There will continue to be a lot of growth in the PA career in the future and as we all know it is a great career to be in at this time.
With that said, keep working hard and making your organizations productive!
