Master the Boss Mindset Negotiation Masterclass Program Discount Code for Certified PA Consulting
If you missed last week’s webinar with Certified PA Consulting (CPAC), you can still see it on Facebook or join in the FREE webinar series to hear more about PA salary and negotiation.
At last week’s webinar, we discussed hot topics in the PA profession and how they might affect PA salary in the future. The first topic we discussed was Optimal Team Practice (OTP) and the three components of OTP. Although OTP could help make PAs more competitive in a job market with NPs, this will not change salary. Salary is calculated based on how much you can bring in compared to overhead for you to practice. OTP will not change either of these.
The other important thing we discussed with OTP is that if you are in a state where there are limitations to practice medicine for PAs, you must get involved with your state chapter; this can be as simple as becoming a member of your state chapter. If you have a passion for PA advocacy, you can volunteer to be more involved.
The second thing we discussed was how budget shortfalls in 2020 could affect salary in 2021. The shortfalls that many practices saw in 2020 were because of decreased visits; this affected everyone in medicine, from PAs to NPs and Physicians. Many offices were closed for weeks to months, and elective procedures were on hold. Without any income coming in for these practices, we saw shortfalls in the budget. I don’t think we will see these types of shutdowns in 2021, so office visits and procedures should go back to normal.
A production-based bonus plan is good for the providers and the practice because of the types of fluctuations we see in productivity. The employer can give a base salary and budget for their overhead. Anything over could be a part of bonus compensation.
The third topic we discussed was the PA name change, as it has been a hot topic for the PA profession. A name change could help public perception of a PA, but there is a financial cost. If a state law governing a PA says “physician assistant” that will have to be changed. At both the national and state level, this could increase the cost of becoming a PA through licensing fees and organizational dues.
Reimbursement for work that you do comes from medicare guidelines, and these amounts will not likely change for a different named profession. Even though there might be a different perception of what PAs can do, the amount of money generated will not change. The effect of a name change will most likely increase the cost of becoming a PA, but not change salaries.
